Landlord’s son held, thanks to closed-circuit TV camera

A week after a 19-year-old boy from Arunachal Pradesh was killed in an alleged racist attack in the capital, a minor girl from Manipur was sexually assaulted at Munirka in South Delhi.

Her landlord’s son, Ashish Tokas alias Vicky, was arrested on Saturday after a case was registered under Sections of the IPC for kidnap, rape and assault and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The 14-year-old girl had been brought to Delhi by her distant relatives.

The police identified the accused from footage of a closed-circuit television camera installed near the victim’s house. The crime took place when the 14-year-old girl stepped out of her house to buy household articles at 10.30 p.m. on Friday. “The accused spotted her, kidnapped her and took her to a room where she was physically and sexually assaulted. He later dumped her in a secluded place in the locality,” a senior police officer said.

The injured girl went to a juice shop for help but the shopowner could not understand her language. She then approached a boy from the northeast and narrated her ordeal.

Her family members, meanwhile, got worried as she did not reach home even by midnight and approached the local police, who began a search and found her at the juice shop, where she was talking to the boy from the northeast.

A medical test at Safdarjung Hospital confirmed rape. She has been admitted there for treatment, the police officer said.

People from the northeast community and JNU students group, however, alleged police inaction and staged a protest outside the Vasant Vihar station on Saturday. They blocked the road and clashed with the police, following which traffic was diverted in the area. The protesters raised anti-police and anti-Delhi government slogans while trying to barge into the station.

Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Barkha Singh later reached the spot and spoke to the protesters. She also held a meeting with senior police officials.

She told reporters: “The accused has been arrested and police have done a fair job this time. We are looking into the case and we will go to any extent to make sure that the perpetrators are punished. ”

The AAP said: “Such condemnable incidents are leading to growing outrage among the people who are agitated over the failure of law enforcement agencies to provide a safe environment for women to move freely and without fear in the city.”
