Chhattisgarh police on Wednesday booked 25 policemen, under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC, for their alleged involvement in the killing of 16-year-old Meena Khalko. She was a tribal girl, killed on July 6, 2011 in an alleged encounter near Navadih village of Sarguja district.

The action came after a one-member judicial commission submitted its report to the State government last week and contested the police theory that Meena was a “Maoist.” “The Anita Jha commission report has been accepted by the government and action has been initiated,” Chief Minister Raman Singh said.

A five-member team of senior police officers has been asked to investigate the case. The police had claimed to have recovered a rifle from her.

However, the people of Navadih denied that any encounter had taken place. The government ordered an inquiry after the opposition Congress produced medical records in the Assembly alleging that the girl was “raped” and “murdered.”
