A 50-year-old Dalit woman returning with her ailing husband from a temple was dragged behind bushes and gang raped allegedly by four men at a wooded area in Bairasia locality near Bhopal, police said on Tuesday.

Police have lodged a case and arrested two accused, while search is on for two other absconding men.

Around 1.30 pm on Monday, the victim along with her husband had gone to the temple which is located a few kilometers away from the road inside wooded area. After puja, the victim was returning along with her husband on foot. The woman was ahead of her ailing husband who was walking slowly with the help of a cane.

It was then the four accused – Khema Kushwaha, Chain Singh Kushwaha, Jitendra Singh and Dashrat Singh – came in the way and gagged her before dragging her to the nearby bushes.

The four men, who are residents of the same village of the victim, took turns to rape her. The men dumped the victim and fled on their motorbikes when a passerby, Balram Yadav, who is also from the same village, raised an alarm on seeing them.

Balram alerted police and took the woman to a nearby hospital. Balram also traced the woman’s husband who was frantically searching for his wife in the wooded area, town inspector, Bairasia, HC Ladiya said.

“A case was registered against the four men under relevant sections of IPC and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after the victim lodged a complaint against them. All the accused are small farmers. Based on the information given by the woman and Balram, we arrested Jitendra and Dashrat from their houses on Tuesday morning. Investigation is on to nab the two absconding accused,” Ladiya said.

The woman underwent a medical check whose report is awaited, the town inspector said.
