NEW DELHI: Getting an Aadhar Card, a unique identity card, which was meant to enhance national security is not mandatory. Making a significant development, on Monday, The Supreme Court ruled that Aadhar cards are not mandatory even as various state governments insist on making it compulsory for a range of formalities, including marriage registration, disbursal of salaries and provident fund among other public services.
Meanwhile, people raised questions about the implementation of scheme on social networking sites. “Adhar card ka koi status nahi to kyo kharcha kiya gaya,” stated Nandkishore Sharma on Facebook.
Notably, thousands of  crores were spent on the AADHAR project by the government.
The Supreme Court trashed Centre’s claim of Rs. 50,000 crore expenses on the UIDAI project. The apex court passed the order in response to a PIL pleading it to examine the voluntary nature of the Aadhaar cards. The PIL was filed by Justice KS Puttaswamy, a retired judge of the Karnataka High Court.
Welcoming SC’s decision, several youngsters called the UIDAI scheme useless. “Awesome decision..a tight slap on the faces of those who plan to loot on this Adhar card scheme…baseless..when we have so many id proof measures already in,” said Samrat Chowdhary, a resident of Noida.
Parikshhit Rao, a student said, “A Passport, a pan card,  driving license, a voter Id card and now Aadhaar card..!Dear Government, Please tell us how many ID cards an Indian Citizen should carry to prove the Citizen Ship.”
