Ahmedabad – Niyaz aims to become city’s first eunuch mayor #LGBTQ

Niyaz Mansuri (40), an eunuch who works as a sanitary worker in Behrampura, made many heads turn when she stepped into the collector’s office at about 1pm on Thursday . Dressed in a Punjabi outfit and adorned with gold ornaments, Mansuri had come to the office to file nomination papers for the ensuing civic elections.Mansuri is contesting from Shahpur.“I want to be the mayor of this city so that I can serve the citizens and give them basic facilities like light, drainage and good roads,“ she said.

When asked about the plight of transgenders in the city , she said that they have equal rights and more facilities should be given to them. “Once I become the mayor, the officials will have to answer why transgenders remained neglected till now,“ added Mansuri. Mansuri had contested the 2004 gene ral elections from Gandhinagar against BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani but had withdrawn later. “I had contested a muni cipal election too but had lost,“ she added.

This time, Mansuri is confident of her victory . “People have seen many candida tes but none were able to deliver. I will en sure the well-being of citizens,“ said Mansuri.
