• An open letter was sent on July 13, 2014 to Israel’s academics, who, on the whole, remained silent in the face of the deterioration over the last few weeks, and the slaughter of the innocents in Gaza by the IDF. We have received over 700 signatures over the last few hours, and this list is now CLOSED. We are unable to deal with the enormous flow, and ask for your understanding. We hope that this call may help to bring about a change in Israel’s public debate about this illegal and immoral use of the army in Gaza, constituting war crimes, according to the UN.

Please forward this call forinformation ONLY, as we are now unable to add names to the list. The list of signatories speaks for itself, we feel. The number of emails from people wishing to be included in the call, is now approaching 1000, though we have asked people to refrain from sending in their names. This is clear evidence of the raw nerve struck by the action, and the widespread anger and frustration amongst academics and intellectuals everywhere about the Israeli continued slaughter, apparently immune to legal challenges and to pressure from all quarters. Let us hope that this list is only a begining of larger actions against the brutalities of the illegal occupation.

Since the operation began, at least 193 Palestinians have been killed (as of the morning July 15th) and over 1,100 have been wounded. Gaza hospitals are reporting a dire shortage of medicine and equipment, particularly for trauma injuries. Thousands of northern Gaza residents fled their homes on Sunday after Israel issued warnings of forthcoming air strikes. Numerous homes have been destroyed, as well as the very fragile infrastructure, severely damaged in 2008/9 and 2012, and hardly repaired since then.

We now have also signatures from academics working in Israeli universities. These are courageous people, who now face serious danger from attacks by right-wing extremists, as happened only yesterday (see: http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/.premium-1.604697) and those signing this take additional risks. They need your protection!

To read about the reception of this call by Israeli academics, see Ali Abunima’s blog on Electronic Intifada:http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/handful-israeli-academics-responds-call-condemn-gaza-slaughter

That so few have reacted by signing is an indication of the political situation in Israel – some 95% support the attack on Gaza. Of course, these figures do not include the 22% of Israeli citizens who are Palestinian – they are not even asked to participate in such polls – and it does not matter what they think. The Jewish Israeli society is inundated by racist and even genocidal sentiments. This is why this initiative is very important.

    The Open Letter

    Dear Friends,

These are desperately bad times. The government of Israel, having provoked the firing of rockets by its rampage through the West Bank, is now using that response as the pretext for an aerial assault on Gaza which has already cost scores of lives. An atmosphere of hysteria is being deliberately provoked in Israel, and whole communities are being subject to collective punishment, a war crime. People are dying, and for what? To prevent a unity government of Fatah and Hamas?

We have been asked by our academic colleagues in Gaza – whose universities have been destroyed a number of times in the last six years, who are unable to teach or study, and who are also in growing need of food and medicines, like the rest of the almost two million Palestinians living in Gaza – to urge you to act urgently, to make your voice heard in Israel and abroad against what the Israeli government is inflicting on the Gaza population. More than 123 people have been killed already in Gaza by the IDF since the start of the Israeli operation on Monday, and the number will be bigger by the time you read this message. Most of these people are children, women and the elderly. There could be no credible claim made that these people were involved in any military activity whatsoever. The Gaza infrastructure, already in tatters, is now further undermined, and the population is in the worst situation it has ever been, and this is getting worse by the minute. These atrocities, committed by Israel will bring neither peace nor security to the region, and can only lead to further deterioration of the already dangerous situation in Palestine/Israel.

We invite you, as fellow academics and intellectuals, to join your voices in an open and resounding protest about these war crimes by the Israeli government – your government. We urge you to stand up and be counted, to answer the call of your Gazan colleagues and make your voice heard. We hope that you will be able and willing to come together and voice your total opposition to the war crimes committed in your name! We realize you may feel worried and lonely, as dissent in Israel now carries a high price. We stand with you when you take this conscientious stand.

If you are an Israeli academic and agree with us on the urgent need to bring an immediate end to those atrocities, and to act to end the illegal occupation in Palestine, please sign the statement at the bottom of this letter by sending us a mail with your name, title and affiliation.

There are currently over 700 signatories from abroad, and over 30 from Israel, but this number is constantly rising

    Statement by Israeli academics:

The signatories to this statement, all academics at Israeli universities, wish it to be known that they utterly deplore the aggressive military strategy being deployed by the Israeli government. The slaughter of large numbers of wholly innocent people, is placing yet more barriers of blood in the way of the negotiated agreement which is the only alternative to the occupation and endless oppression of the Palestinian people. Israel must agree to an immediate cease-fire, and start negotiating in good faith for the end of the occupation and settlements, through a just peace agreement.

If you are an Israeli academic, working in Israel, who would like to sign this statement, please send an email to Prof. Rachel Giora [email protected] with your name, title and affiliation.
