Andhra Pradesh law student arrested for FB comment on cyclone Hudhud #FOE

There have been numerous incidents where this was used to meet political ends and this is no different. The law goes against the basic freedom of expression and speech and should be repealed immediately.

A political angle to this whole incident might be that he is a activist of the opposition party YSRCP which clearly implies that the state machinery has taken the issue up at the behest of the ruling party TDP! I was just asking myself, what would have happened if he belonged to the ruling party?

A law student who posted “adverse” comments on his Facebook page about the destructive trail of the “Hudhud” cyclone in Andhra Pradesh was arrested by the CID officials under provisions of Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code, a CID press release said on Wednesday.

The arrested man Chaganti Rahul Reddy of Arundalpet in Guntur is stated to have posted a comment in English and Telugu saying “I love u hudhoodh…” and that nature was taking revenge against the betrayers. “Thus Mr Chaganti Rahul Reddy posted irresponsible anti-people comments in the Facebook after the natural disaster Hududh” (sic), said the CID press release.

The investigating agency had further stated that Mr Rahul Reddy was an activist of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), an opposition party in Andhra Pradesh, and that he “closely moves with YSRCP District Student Wing”. Mr Reddy was remanded in judicial custody.

The CID had on October 15 received a complaint on “adverse comments” made in social networking websites regarding the severe cyclone that ravaged the coastal city of Visakhapatnam and neighbouring districts.

Another person, whom police identified as Samudrala Uday Kumar of Sainikpuri in Hyderabad was also arrested and remanded in judicial custody on same charges, the press release added.
