SURAT: The estimated value of assets of tainted religious leader Asaram and his son Narayan Sai, facing rape charges and at present lodged in jails of Rajasthan and Gujarat, respectively, is around Rs 10,000 crore.City police had recovered 42 bundles of documents on October 26 and 27, 2013 from an apartment in Ahmedabad. Police upon scrutiny of these documents recovered from a follower of Narayan Sai have now concluded that the estimated value of the assets of the father-son duo is around Rs 10,000 crore.

Police, who took three months to scrutinize the documents, have listed the assets under 34 heads like land, property, cash, investment and foreign exchange. Asaram and Sai had accumulated the assets with the help of their followers in the past 15 years.

Surat police have written to Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), income tax (I-T) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) asking them to initiate investigations in this regard. The governments of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharasthra, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh have also been given information about the land purchases made by the rape accused in their states.

“The total value of the cash, money in 800 bank accounts, investments in bonds, securities and foreign exchange (US dollar, Sterling pound, Euro and dirham) touches Rs 4,000 crore. The value of property as per the six-year-old documents is around Rs 6,000 crore, but its actual market value could be much higher.

The scrutiny of the documents recovered from only one place shows that the father-son’s assets are worth Rs 10,000 crore. It is possible they have such documents hidden at other locations in India about which we have no knowledge as of now,”city police commissioner Rakesh Asthanasaid.

Surat police had registered two complaints – one against Asaram and the other against his son Sai of rape, sexual assault and illegal confinement as alleged by two sisters on October 6, 2013. The younger of the two sisters, who is 30 years old, filed the complaint against Sai, accusing him of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 in ashrams at different locations.

The rape survivor’s 33-year-old elder sister had lodged a complaint of rape against Asaram. The rape complaint against Asaram is being investigated by Ahmedabad police.
