Threat Letter Received by Women Cops in Ahmedabad Who Probed Asaram Rape Case

AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT Ahmedabad Crime Branch has started investigations into a letter received by the police that threatened two women police officers who had probed into the alleged rape case against self-styled godman Asaram Bapu.

According to statement issued by the police, the city’s women police station received a letter on Monday, in which the sender has threatened a Police Inspector, Divya Raviya and an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kanan Desai with dire consequences.

The police statement also mentions that the sender has written ‘Sant Asaram Ashram’ on top of the letter.

Ms Raviya was the Investigating officer (IO) in the sexual assault case against Asaram while Ms Desai was her superior officer when the charge-sheet was filed against the self-styled godman him last year.

Security has been provided to the two women officers, two armed personnel have been deployed to ensure round-the-clock cover for the two officers, according to the police.

Asaram was accused of repeated sexual assault and illegal confinement by one of two Surat based sisters during her stay at his ashram between 1997 and 2006 in Motera, the outskirts of the city.

The younger sister had accused Asaram’s son Narayan Sai of repeated sexual assault during her stay at their Surat ashram.

So far nine witnesses in the case have been attacked so far, three of them have died.
