Subject: Physical Assault on Lady Journalist by Male Police Officers
Dated: Guwahati, 1 February 2015

Dear Sir/Madam,

We on behalf of journalist fraternity of Assam would like to
draw your attention towards an unwanted incident of mishandling a lady
television reporter by two male police officers in Guwahati on 31
January 2015.
The victim journalist, who works for a Guwahati based satellite news
channel DY365 alleged that she was physically abused in the Latashil
police station in central Guwahati while she was there for a reporting
purpose.
In her FIR to officer-in-charge, Latashil PS (dated: Guwahati
31/01/2015), Ms Mridusmita Bhuyan informed that she went with her
camera person named Tapan Das to Latashil PS on Saturday to cover a
story relating to the dilapidated condition of the premises.
They found that a quarter inside Latashil PS was rented out to
outsiders by the police men. Soon after completing their works, both
the lady reporter and the camera person were about to leave the PS
campus, when one sub-inspector Samsuddin Ahmed and officer-in-charge
of Latashil PS (Mr Chidananda Bora) along with other police persons
stopped them and started physically assaulting both the media persons.
“They have dragged me and my camera person inside the PS and
mercilessly beaten us and touched me in my private part,” said the
FIR.
The police officers also allegedly pointed their arms at them
‘attempting to murder’ the media persons. The police men also threaten
‘not to publish the story’ and broke their equipments in the process.
The media persons, as described in the FIR, also sustained injuries.
May we now request you to take the matter seriously and take
appropriate actions against the guilty police officers as they
mishandled a lady journalist on duty?
Please find attached here with a scan copy of the FIR, lodged by the
victim journalist, for your kind information.
Thanking you in anticipation.
