Case comes up at grievance meet chaired by Upa Lokayukta

Upa Lokayukta Subhash B. Adi chaired a grievances redressal meeting at the Bangalore Rural zilla panchayat on Tuesday.

Over 150 people from Hoskote and Nelamangala attended the meeting. Heart-rending scenes were witnessed when they poured out their woes and sought redressal to their problems.

Teachers’ woes

In a shocking case, 150 government school teachers in Nelamangala told Mr. Adi that they have not got salary increments that were due to them in 1974. The aggrieved teachers, who have formed the Nelamangala Retired Government Employees Association, told Mr. Adi that they became eligible for a salary increment nearly 40 years ago but the office of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction has not yet released the money.

H.B. Narasimhaiah, the secretary of the association explained that in the 1970s the State government introduced a policy under which it became mandatory for all State government employees to have matriculate level proficiency in Kannada. Those who had such proficiency as well as those who acquired it by passing Kannada examinations were supposed to be given a salary increment. That increment, however, has not been given.

“As of today, the arrears of that increment stands at around Rs. 50,000 per teacher,” Mr. Narasimhaiah said, adding, “All of the teachers who were supposed to be given the hikes have since retired.” Another member of the association said, “Had the money come in time, it would have been valuable. What is Rs. 50,000 worth in today’s day?” Mr. Adi ordered the officials to release the money within three months with interest.
