An inquiry has been ordered into the incident in which a woman gave birth on the road after allegedly being refused admission to the taluk hospital in Aurad, Bidar, on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tewari has asked the district health and family welfare officer M.A. Jabbar to inquire into the incident. “We have also recommended the suspension of the medical officer responsible for this,” Mr. Tewari said.

Complicated case’

On Thursday, Surekha Deepak, a pregnant woman from Maharashtra came to the Aurad taluk hospital. However, medical officer Shilpa Shindhe, who was on duty, asked her to go to the Bidar District Hospital, saying it was a complicated case. The woman could not travel further and gave birth to the baby on the road. The hospital staff relented and admitted the woman and the newborn.

Dilip Kumar, the woman’s husband, complained to the authorities that the medical officer refused to admit his wife despite several requests. “The doctor also threatened to call the police if we did not leave the hospital,” he told The Hindu.

“The Aurad hospital says the patient had low blood count and her legs were swollen. That is why she was asked to go to Bidar. But then, these problems could have been handled there,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

Mr. Tewari has asked the officials to check if the taluk hospital had an ambulance or the 108 ambulance system was working in Aurad and why the medical officer did not send the woman to Bidar in the ambulance. “If a childbirth can happen on the road, it could have happened in the hospital. The doctor and other staff who are responsible will face strict action,” Mr. Tewari said.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/bidar-woman-gives-birth-on-road-inquiry-ordered/article9222051.ece

  1. Lack of proper provision of medical facilities including provision of ambulances in India is causing many casualties. There is a need for improving medical facilities. The bidar woman and the child should be given good treatment for healthy recovery.
