The constable was harassed by senior officers, says CPI(Maoist)

Amid claims by the Bastar Police that hundreds of Maoists have surrendered in the past year, a “reverse surrender” of a police constable has taken place, the CPI (Maoist) has said.

“Michche Vadda, 37, a police constable posted in the Farasgav police station of Narayanpur, has surrendered before the Kutul area Janatana Sarkar of the CPI (Maoist). He worked for the police for more than 10 years since 2005. He was being harassed by his senior officers and was pained over the continuous atrocities by security forces on the tribal people in Bastar,” said a statement issued by Rajmand Mandavi, secretary of the Mad divisional committee of the outlawed CPI (Maoist).

Mr. Vadda went missing on March 13 on a visit to his village Kutul. The police believed that he had been “abducted.” However, the Maoists claimed that he had surrendered “willingly” with his wife Manju on March 29. “Vadda had run away from his village in 2005 and joined the police as a Gopniya Sainik (secret agent). He was promoted as an auxiliary constable and then as a constable.

“Police killed his cousin Rainu and his friend Samalu in a fake encounter in 2007. His brother Karia Vadda, who was also working with the police, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the Kakdazor police camp,” the Maoist leader said.

Vadda’s senior, Mandavi said, asked him to join the DRG (District Reserve Group) of the police, but he refused. “Angered by this, the senior started harassing Vadda’s wife Manju. Vadda was deeply hurt … Ultimately, he came back to his village and surrendered before us,” he said.

Narayanpur SP Amit Kamble did not respond to calls from The Hindu.
