Nashik: At least one person is killed and over twenty people, including over two-dozen policemen, were left injured after violent mob attacked police in Harsul – a small town in Triyambak Taluka – some 60 kms from Nashik.

After the clashes, police first resorted to lathi charge and then firing killing at least one person. Among the injured are three senior police officers.

“The town is now under curfew”, an officer at the local police control room said.

According to locals, angry mob attacked police, and also looted and set on fire properties belonging to the Muslim community Tuesday morning.

Tension was rife in the town since last few days after dead body said to be of local tribal was found into a well belonging to a Muslim.

Local tribals were demanding from the police to book a case against the Muslim. Violence broke out in the town today morning after the local tribals took out a morcha demanding immediate action against the culprits.

The incident occurred when Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh both were in Nashik for the inauguration of Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2015.

The violence erupted just after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh left the district headquarter.

Heavy police bandobast has been deployed in the town where the situation is said to be tense but under control.

The violence coincided with the opening of the year-long Nashik Kumbh mela and Ramadam – the Muslim holy month of fasting.
