Ironically, the BJP’s office is on a road named after a king who converted millions of Hindus and Jains to Buddhism. If Aurangzeb must be exorcised, what about Ashoka?A day after BSP chief Mayawati objected to the renaming of Aurangzeb Road after late President APJ Abdul Kalam, the CPM and JD(U) also opposed the move of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

“The renaming of the road is a very unfortunate measure since it is widely regarded as a first step in a campaign to rename historical places and roads on communal grounds,” the CPM said in a statement.

JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asked him to direct the NDMC to not rename Aurangzeb Road as Abdul Kalam Road. “I am not going into the details of the personality of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, but I would like to mention that history cannot be changed by just tearing pages,” Yadav wrote. Delhi’s history, according to him, could be read even through names of its roads. The renaming would be a deviation from history, he added.

Besides, the JD(U) chief maintained, that the renaming will amount to opening of a Pandora’s box. “I am of the opinion that we should not touch sensitive issues, rather non-issues, and instead concentrate on important national issues.”
