A 19-year-old girl died after being stabbed 35 times by two brothers who had been stalking her for several years and against whom she had filed a police complaint two years ago.

A murder case has been registered and the two — Sunny Jai Prakash, 21, and Ajay alias Eelu, 19 — arrested. Police said the men wanted revenge.

The girl had filed a police complaint against the duo in October 2013. No FIR was registered and Sunny had got off after a fortnight behind bars under preventive detention — months after the stringent new rape law that included stalking and sexual harassment as criminal offences came into force, a direct fallout of the 16/12 Delhi gang rape. There was no action against Eelu, then a juvenile.

On Thursday evening, the victim was out grocery shopping with her mother in central Delhi’s Anand Parbat area when the two accosted her. “They started misbehaving with her, slapped her when she resisted. When she threatened to call the police, they whipped out a knife and stabbed her. I tried to intervene but the men pushed me and I fell,” said an eyewitness who did not wish to be named.

The 19-year-old student was stabbed repeatedly in the face, back, neck, stomach and chest, the police said. She tried to run and managed to reach her neighbour’s house, where she collapsed. Her mother, who rushed to save her, was injured.

Another witness accused Sunny and Eelu’s mother, who lived in the same neighbourhood, of instigating them. “She collapsed at the gate of my house. We kept requesting the duo’s mother to intervene but she was encouraging them,” said the neighbour.

Daughter and mother were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where the former succumbed to her injuries while the latter was discharged after treatment. The accused were nabbed within hours after their mobile phones were put under surveillance, the police said.
