Srinagar, July 1, 2015, DHNS:

Jammu & Kashmir Minister for Health has courted another controversy after a picture showing him touching the collar of a female doctor went viral on social media.

Chaudhary Lal Singh, the Health Minister, had gone to a hospital in Lakhanpur area
of Jammu to check the preparedness for the Amar-nath pilgrimage, officially scheduled to start on Thursday.

However, a senior official present at the hospital has reportedly said the Minister moved towards a female doctor and asked her “Bitya, your collar is not proper,” and corrected it. There was no protest by the female doctor.”

The minister was accompanied by Health and Medical Education Secretary Dr Mandeep Bhandari and SP Kathua Nasir Khan.

Social media reacts

The incident has evoked sharp reaction on social media. “#AchheDin for Kashmir. BJP Minister Lal Singh adjusting a young female doctor’s collar, violating her personal… (sic),” activist Shehla Rashid wrote on her Twitter handle.

Reacting over Lal Singh’s gesture, Shuja-ul-Haq, who works for a national news channel twitted: “On the world Doctor’s Day my sympathies are with the doctors of J&K.”

Lal Singh, who left Congress last year and joined BJP that co-governs the state with the PDP, is not new to controversies.

In March this year, a female psychiatrist had filed a complaint against him, accusing him of “mental harassment amounting to outraging modesty.”
In February this year, Mr Singh was accused by a woman doctor of mental harassment after he rebuked her for not wearing her lab coat.
