He was trying to prevent cops from misbehaving with parents, students

A Delhi University teacher, who attempted to prevent policemen from misbehaving with some parents and their wards, was allegedly arrested at Maurice Nagar police station on charges of assaulting and obstructing the police from carrying out their duty. However, the police denied having taken such an action against any teacher.

According to a friend of Law Faculty teacher Rakesh K. Meena, he was on his way to a library on North Campus when he spotted some parents and children organising a protest. Since the policemen deployed there were allegedly manhandling them, Mr. Meena intervened. When the policemen were taking the parents to the area police station, he followed them and confronted them, threatening to lodge a complaint against them.

“However, the policemen locked him up at Civil Lines police station on false charges. He has been slapped with non-bailable provisions. He has been falsely accused of having assaulted cops and indulging in riot,” said Mr. Meena’s friend, adding that a delegation of teachers will meet the area Deputy Commissioner of Police seeking action against the policemen involved and Mr. Meena’s immediate release.
