The Medical Council of India has suspended 15 neurologist from Madhya Pradesh, eight of whom are from Indore, from practicing for a period of six months for violating rules of the Medical Council of India regarding accepting travel facility and hospitality from pharmaceutical company.

The complaint has been lodged by Swasthya Adhikar Manch on June 10, 2012 to Medical Council of India to investigate in to matter of Intas Pharmaceutical sponsored foreign tours availed by these 15 doctors.

Amulya Nidhi of Swasthya Adhikar Manch said that the trip made by the doctors is a violation of Amendment notification of Medical Council of India dated 10th December 2009, clause 6.8.1-B and C to receive travel facility and hospitality from pharmaceutical company.

The said matter was then considered by Ethics committee of MCI on June 12, 2014, and in its subsequent hearings, the matter was further forwarded to Madhya Pradesh Medical Council for further investigation.

After all investigation and hearing all parties including doctors, the ethics committee of MCI confirmed that it is a violation of Amendment notification of MCI 2009 and hence as punitive action, the 15 doctors have been suspended for the period of 6 months.

The MCI has directed Madhya Pradesh Medical Council to take action according to its notification. The MCI will also issue a letter to Drug Controller General of India to warn M/s. Intas Pharma, Ahmadabad, Gujarat and take appropriate action.

After the complaint was lodged against the doctors, they tried to save themselves by issuing cheques to the pharma company which then issued receipts. But the MCI saw through the chicanery and noted, “On May 25, 2012 the company and the doctors went into arranging the ways to save themselves.

The doctors issued cheques and the company issued receipts after the trip causing discrepancy in the series of receipts and statement of the doctors. There is possibility that the cheques issued to the company might have been cashed and refunded to the doctors.”
