The Gurgaon district court granted bail to 77 of the 145 Maruti Suzuki India Limited workers involved in the 2012 Manesar plant violence, on Tuesday. The workers were arrested after company HR manager Avinesh Dev died during the violence.

The Supreme Court had earlier granted bail to two workers in February, 31 months after their arrest.

On the same ground, senior Supreme Court lawyer Vrinda Grover and local counsel Monu Kuhar had argued before the court on March 11 and demanded bail for the rest of the workers.

Grover said the eye-witnesses had failed to identify the accused and contented that they should be granted bail as there there was no evidence against them.

However, the court had reserved its order on the bail plea for March 17.

A total of 147 workers were arrested in connection with the violence at the company’s plant on July 18, 2012, in which a senior manager was killed and several executives injured. Two of the accused — Sunil Kumar and Kanwaljeet Singh — were allowed regular bail by the Supreme Court in February. Sixty-five more workers were declared proclaimed offenders in the case.

After the incident at the plant, the management terminated the services of 550 permanent and over 1,800 contract workers.
General Secretary of Maruti Suzuki Workers Union, Kuldeep Jhangu, said he is hopeful that the remaining workers will also be granted bail after this verdict.
