Twelve days after social activist Piyush Manush was arrested for protesting against the construction of an overbridge at Mulluvadi Gate here, Principal District Judge N. Seshasayee on Wednesday granted him conditional bail and asked him to sign for three weeks before Judicial Magistrate-I, twice a day.

The bail application was moved by Monica Sethia, wife of the activist on Tuesday. Public Prosecutor P. Dhanasekar had strongly opposed the bail and said that cases were pending against Mr. Manush and said that members of his Salem Citizens Forum were using social media to campaign against the judiciary. But, the judge said that the judiciary was not concerned about it. At the same time, the judge questioned if it was proper on the part of Mr. Manush to have prevented policemen, who had the duty of investigating cases and prevent crime, from performing their duties.

The judge granted him bail and asked him to sign at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. before the Judicial Magistrate-I and execute a bond for Rs. 10,000 with two sureties.

The judge also asked him to be available for interrogation when required by the investigation officer and asked him not to tamper with witnesses.

Mr. Manush is expected to be released from Salem Central Prison on Thursday evening. While his associates, M. Karthick and G. Muthuselvan, were granted bail last week, his bail was denied by Judicial Magistrate-I on July 14.

  1. What torture was he put to in the prison should be inquired into, just to find out the purpose behind it.
