The minor girl who was allegedly molested by an Army man in Handwara, evoking protests and leading to subsequent killing of five persons in the north Kashmir district at the hands of troops, was released from the police detention after 27 days on Tuesday.
A statement of Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), a Srinagar-based rights group, said the illegal confinement of the minor girl and her family has finally been ended by Police.
JKCCS said this development comes after a sustained campaign in which all legal remedies were used by the family.
On Monday, the High Court sought the family’s affidavit to end the “protective custody” of the Police, which the family’s lawyers would submit on Wednesday, the JKCCS statement said.
However, Police in a preemptive manner has ended the minor girl and her family’s “illegal detention” even before the State High Court announced its decision, the rights group said.
JKCCS said they now hope the Handwara minor girl would destress herself and soon the next steps regarding her struggle for justice would be taken up.
The rights groupssaid they thank everyone who supported the Handwara minor girl and her family and promised to carry forward the struggle for truth and justice.
