RANCHI: Jamshedpur police on Monday arrested a 45-year-old security guard Sambhu Mahto who acted kindly to get close to a 15-year-old rape victim recovering at the female ward of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, where she was admitted after a boy raped her on January 26, and raped her on Sunday evening. The second rape within a week’s period has left the girl deeply traumatized.

According to police Mahto went close to the minor when her mother had gone out to bring some medicines. No one doubted the best intentions of the security guard, entrusted with protecting patients and hospital properties.

“The accused pretended to help the girl when her mother (attendant) was away. He helped the girl reach the toilet in the general ward and inside the toilet he raped the girl. The girl was yet to recover from the first incidence of rape,” Jamshedpur SSP Anoop T Mathew said.

The guard escaped after the incident allegedly with the help of some of his colleagues. “We detained six of his colleagues who helped us find his location. He was arrested from Sitaramdera locality,” a police officer said.

MGM is the main government hospital in chief minister Raghubar Das‘s hometown where it is the only hope for sick who cannot afford treatment at private hospitals.
The incident interestingly came two days after CM made a surprise visit to the hospital to make sure the authorities work hard to protect the interests of the patients.

“The incident has left the girl weaker and deeply traumatized” Anand Bihari Dubey, a Jamshedpur based leader who visited the hospital, said.

The boy who raped the girl on January 26 was a minor. He was nabbed later and sent to a remand home.

“It is one of the rare incidents of rape I have come across in my career,” Jamshedpur SSP said.
