In Chhatral Town, Gandhinagar district, fingers of a Muslim woman were chopped off and her son was brutally beaten up allegedly by the members of Bajrang Dal for not obeying their diktat to stay indoors.

The left thumb, index finger and middle finger of Roshanbiwi Syed, 52, were chopped off. Her son, Farzan, 32 suffered fractures on his hands and skull after being brutally thrashed by the miscreants. Both mother and son were hospitalised and their conditions are said to be stable now.

Goons attack mother-son duo

The local activists say that since December 6, when the Bajrang Dal led a procession to mark the 1992 demolition of Babri Mosque through the Muslim dominated Kasbavaas, there has been a heightened communal tension in the area.

Roshanbiwi’s nephew Aslam Syed told The Times of India, “On Monday morning, Syed and her son were cautioned not to leave their locality. When they went out to graze their cattle, some members of Bajrang Dal attacked them.Luckily, a person from the Bharwad community who was out to sell milk spotted them and saved their lives by taking them to their family.”

The Police has registered a case under IPC Section 307 for attempt to murder. The investigating is ongoing.

Communal tension in the area

According to Sharif Malek, a local activist, the same goons were also involved in other incidents of violence in the past.

Virendra Singh Yadav, Superintendent of Police, Gandhinagar told TOI that there were two cases of violence on March 5, one at Pratappura Village and the other at Chhatral town, both of which fall under Kalol taluka police station’s jurisdiction. He said,”In this incident (of chopping fingers), police will lodge a complaint under IPC Section 307 for attempt to murder and will conduct a thorough investigation to find out whether this was an incident of communal violence or personal enmity.”

He added, “We have called for a meeting of the local peacekeeping committee and have deployed police forces in Chhatral to make sure communal tension does not flare up there.”

On March 4 also, a fight had broken out in the Chhatral area, however, the reasons for the fight are not known.

When The Logical Indian contacted VN Solanki, Deputy superintendent, Kalol Taluk, he said, “The investigations are on. We are still investigating to ascertain who has caused the injury to the mother-son duo.”
