Rajkot: In a brutal case of honour killing, a three-month pregnant woman was allegedly murdered by her parents and brother at a village in Amreli as she had married a man from a different caste against their wishes.

Nayna Dadukia (25), who belonged to the Koli community, had fled with her lover Prakash Khetaria, a Dalit, in November last year and got married.

While Nayna’s family was dead against her relationship, Khetaria’s parents did not have any serious objection. However, the couple stayed away from both houses for a few days without anyone coming to know about their location. They feared violent backlash from the Dadukia family.

Police said a few days ago, the couple came back to the Khetaria family home in Sonaria village near Amreli town and started living there. On Wednesday, Nayna’s parents and brother saw her going to some hospital with her mother-inlaw. They pounced on the duo and dragged Nayna home.

Khetaria’s mother immediately called him up and he rushed to Nayna’s house. When he reached there, her father Bhanu hurled casteist abuses and threatened to kill him. Talking to TOI, Khetaria said, “I called on the Abhayam women’s helpline.” However, by then, Nayna’s parents and brother had taken her to a deserted house outside the village and strangled her to death. Khetaria got to know that Nayna was lying there and he informed the police. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
