AHMEDABAD: Mehul Vaghela (18) of Palaj village was beaten up by a gang of youths over his displaying his surname on his motorcycle. Vaghela was admitted to Civil Hospital Ahmedabad on Sunday for further treatment for severe internal injuries sustained.According to police officials, Mehul came to the village to watch garbas on Tuesday. When he was going home at around 11.30 pm, four youths stopped him. They snatched his bike keys and told him that he was not supposed to use the surname ‘Vaghela’ on his bike as was from a lower caste.

Mehul was attacked by the four youth over the issue. His mother and family member brought him to Civil Hospital, Gandhinagar and registered a complaint at Chiloda police station. S K Savani, DSP Gandhinagar said, “All the accused are minors and have been detained. We are in the process of producing them at the juvenile court. The victim stated that the same minors had attacked on him before, but the matter was resolved without a complaint. This time he complained to police.”

On Sunday, Mehul was transferred to the trauma ward of Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad for further treatment. Doctors treating Mehul said, “He has sustained internal injuries. He will take a few days to recover.” Mehul works as a liftman in at Sachivalaya on contract basis.
