AHMEDABAD: In a first-of-its kind incident in Gujarat since the notes demonetization, two youths -Pankhil Patel, 27, and Sagar Popat alias Thakkar -smashed the glass doors of two ATM booths in Vatva on Friday night because they could not withdraw cash. The youths are friends and are both educated.Police alleged that the youths wanted “to become heroes overnight by vandalizing the ATMs during the cash crisis.Police said they have been arrested.

According to the complaint lodged by Babu Maurya, the guard at the Bank of Baroda ATM under Isanpur overbridge, two youths on a bike came to withdraw money from the ATM at 11.30pm.

 

 

“They got enraged when they could not withdraw cash and this led to a scuffle with the watchman. They then threw stones at the glass panels of the ATM booth and vandalized it. They then went to an ICICI Bank ATM at Parasnagar and when they couldn’t withdraw money there either, they vandalized it,” said a police official.

 

Locals saw the youths vandalizing the ATM and phoned the police control room which directed a police van in the area to the spot.

 

“We got there in minutes and caught the two at the spot. They have been arrested for vandalizing private property belonging to the bank,” said inspector J H Sarvaiya of Vatva police station.

 

On interrogating them police learned that Pankhil Patel is graphic designer with a private company in Maninagar, while Sagar, a BSc in Chemistry, is in the outsourcing business for a private company in Ellisbridge.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/cash-crunch-youths-vandalize-two-atms/articleshow/55521363.cms
