CHANDIGARH: Amid the spectre of honour killings in Haryana, another couple, after four months of their inter-caste marriage, in Rohtak district has taken shelter in a police protection home apprehending threat to their life. A 23-year-old teacher, Sanjay, complained to police on Wednesday that parents of his wife Anjali might kill her, said investigating officer Satbir Singh.

From an upper caste family, Sanjay fell in love with a dalit girl, Anjali, 23. He is a resident of Sudana village and works as a teacher in a private institute while Anjali, from Ambedkar Nagar locality of Rohtak town, is pursuing junior basic teacher (JBT) course. The couple got married on June 23.

According to sources, a few days after their marriage, family members of Anjali took her home. “Emotionally blackmailing her, they succeeded in convincing Anjali to stay with them only,” said a police officer. Sanjay wanted Anjali to get back to him but her parents prevented him from doing so. He approached the court of sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) for issuance of search warrants of Anjali. When police produced her before the magistrate, Anjali stated that she wanted to stay with her parents.

On Wednesday, Anjali had gone to a college where she met Sanjay and they planned to stay together. However, according to the police, Anjali’s parents reached there and tried to take her back. Then Sanjay took the help of cops, who produced both before the SDM. The magistrate sent the couple to the protection home after the girl stated that she wanted to stay with her husband.
