Kolkata, 31 December
A sixteen-year-old rape victim of Madhyamgram, who had attempted to immolate herself after being threatened with dire consequences by the accused, today succumbed to her injuries at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
She was admitted to the hospital on 23 December after sustaining 85 per cent burn injuries.
All hell broke loose at the hospital, following the 16-year-old’s death. Left Front leaders, including Mr Shyamal Chakraborty, staged a demonstration and held a rally up to Shyambazar five-point crossing after the victim’s family members alleged the girl died due to medical negligence.
Some Left Front supporters also held a rally in Madhyamgram Chowmatha area and put up a roadblock for about an hour. Local residents led a candle light rally up to Humayunpur in Madhyamgram.
The girl was raped twice on 25 and 26 October in Madhyamgram. On 25 October she was raped when she was returning home and the next day she was again raped in front of her father while they were going for medical tests. Subsequently, she had lodged a complaint with the police and six persons were arrested.
The victim and her family members were forced to rent a house in Dum Dum after being humiliated by the associates of the accused. She attempted suicide on 23 December when close associates of the accused ~ Mr Monta Sil and Mr Ratan Sil ~ went to their Dum Dum residence and threatened them with dire consequences.
The victim’s father today said the hospital authorities didn’t shift the girl to SSKM Hospital despite repeated requests. “This could be a conspiracy to kill my daughter to shield some of the accused, who are still at large,” he said.
Dr Suman Biswas, spokesperson of the state Health Department, said a board was formed to probe into the 25 December allegation of medical negligence. “The law will take its own course,” he said.
Hundreds of Left Front supporters reached the hospital following the girl’s death and held a rally demanding justice for the victim. It led to traffic congestion in the area. Later, some Aam Aadmi Party supporters also visited the hospital.
