ROHTAK: Haryana khap panchayat has urged the Haryana government to ban wedding ceremonies at night while arguing that drunken driving by the youths who attend marriage parties led to road accidents and had resulted in loss of several lives.

Om Prakash Dhankar, convener of the meeting informed that a khap leader raised the issue in the meeting in Rohtak on Saturday which was supported by the khap panchayat. “The night marriages which was earlier an urban phenomenon are also getting popular in rural areas.

The youngsters participating in baraats (marriages parties) got drunk during attending the ceremonies which had been resulting in road mishaps at night. Large number of deaths have occurred due to such accidents in past”, he said adding that all the khap representatives supported the proposal and decided to urge the Haryana chief minister to ban wedding ceremonies at night.

He informed that the khap panchayat representatives would also visit villages in their respective areas to convince people not to organise marriages at night so that rising rates of road accident could be brought down which is an obvious fallout of drunken driving
