Delhi University wants girl students to go under cover to be safe. Shorts and skirts are a big no on the list of dos and don’ts for 900 students who begin a week-long study trip on Monday.

The university has laid out a code of conduct for the students — both boys and girls — who leave for Punjab on the Gyanodaya Express, its exclusive “educational train”.

The students, most of them adults, have been told to ‘strictly adhere’ to the dress code. Girls will not wear skirts, shorts or spaghetti tops. No shorts or sleeveless T-shirts for boys.

The step has been taken to ensure girls’ safety, DU officials say. “We have taken a precautionary measure as students may have to interact with all kinds of people on the journey,” said CS Dubey, chairperson, core committee, Gyanodaya Education Trip. “There are students from the UK as well and we will be responsible if something untoward happens.”

Though the university talked about safety, it put out the mobile phone numbers of all the students, including girls, on its website, which is open to public.

The numbers were removed after HT brought it to the university’s notice. The students will visit Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar in Punjab and Kurukshetra in Haryana.
