Tribal community members from H.D. Kote, Periyapatna, Hunsur and other places in the district staged a demonstration in the city on Thursday, seeking implementation of the Tribal Rights Act and rehabilitation of the displaced families.

They staged a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office and demanded that the rehabilitation package suggested by professor Muzaffar Assadi in his report to the government be implemented at the earliest.

The report followed a directive by the High Court of Karnataka while hearing a petition filed by Budakattu Krishikara Sangha in 1998.

The report suggested the rehabilitation of 3,418 tribal families. They alleged that the government had not taken any measures so far to implement the recommendations of the report and was thus liable to contempt of court.

The government drew flak for its failure to acquire 40 acres of land to rehabilitate 20 tribal families by providing them 2 acres each though it was ordained in the Cabinet meeting held at Hosahalli in H.D. Kote more than 10 years ago, they added.

The land identified for the purpose has been encroached upon owing to alleged lethargy of the local officials, the sangha, which is spearheading the protest, said.

Sangha members alleged that none of the tribal hamlets or colonies in Mysuru district had seen development in the last 70 years and none of the tribal people had been allotted site for housing. They suggested that land be acquired from the local gramathana and converted into sites to rehabilitate the tribal community. Their other demands included improvements to roads and better connectivity to tribal hamlets from major towns, access to their traditional burial grounds which are in the forests and implementation to the Tribal Rights Act which was promulgated nearly 10 years ago but was yet to be implemented.

  1. The delay in government’s implementation of rehabilitation measures is deplorable. The suffering of tribals due to lack of infrastructure facilities, transport facilities and housing facilities has been persisting for long.
