Those recruited will be given Rs.500 daily

: Minister for Home Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said here on Monday that the State government would recruit 100 tribespeople as Home Guards by giving them daily wages of Rs. 500 each to check the activities of Maoists in the forests.

Talking to mediapersons, Mr. Radhakrishnan said such a step would ensure the full cooperation of tribespeople in checking the activities of radical Left organisations in the forests. A sum of Rs 3.25 crore had been set aside to strengthen security in 16 police stations bordering the forest areas in the State.

He said the government had obtained reports that the Maoists used the Adivasis as tools for their subversive activities. Therefore, the government would seek their complete support.

The Minister said the government planned to establish an anti-terrorist force to deal with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). Three companies of the armed police battalion, each comprising 100 personnel, would be given specialised training for the purpose.

The government had also decided to provide an additional allowance of Rs.1,000 to police personnel deployed for anti-Maoist operations.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said discussions among the levels of Directors General of Police in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were being held to tackle the operations of Maoists in the tri-junction of these States. The talks are progressing, he said.
