Rajkot: Women in Junagadh district are shedding blood, literally, to protest the construction of bypass of JetpurSomnath national highway.
On Sunday, the agitation by farmers, who fear losing their fertile land to the project, intensified with women from 10 villages writing protest letters to chief minister Narendra Modi with their blood.
Atup Sekhda, a member of Khedut Hit Rakshak Samiti, which is spearheading the agitation, said that 101 women wrote letters to Modi with their blood and protested against the land acquisition for the project.
“Chief minister Narendra Modi had told women, “You write a postcard, your
bhai will respond immediately.” Villagers had written 1,000 postcards to him but they never got any response from his government. Now, we have to write with our blood to tell him that his ‘sisters’ are not happy with the land acquisition,” said Naynaben Ram, a resident of Vadhavi village.
The programme was held at Vadhavi near Junagadh on Sunday morning.
“We will not allow them to snatch away our agricultural land for the bypass,” said Jivtiben, another protestor.
The farmers of 10 villages near Junagadh town have been protesting against the proposed bypass for a few months now. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is developing the 123.45 km fourlane (NH-8D) project from Jetpur to Somnath.
Farmers say that they would lose fertile land in the project and the authorities have given them no alternative.
“Earlier, the bypass alignment was at a different place but due to political pressure, the alignment of the bypass has been changed and farmers will lose their livelihood,” said Sekhda.
In fact, fortnight ago, hundreds of farmers led by activist-politician Dr Kanubhai Kalsaria were detained when they staged a non-violent protest during the land acquisition process by government official.
