IPS officer accused in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case promoted #WTFnews

Written by Sweta Dutta | Jaipur |Posted: January 24, 2015

IPS officer Dinesh MN, accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, was promoted by the state government to the post of Deputy Inspector General and thereafter Inspector General with effect from May 9, 2014. Dinesh has served seven years in jail in connection with the case and was released on bail four days before being reinstated.

Highly placed sources said that a favourable BJP government and particularly Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria, who too was named by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the chargesheet, at the helm of affairs, Dinesh’s come-back and promotion became possible.

While Kataria was unavailable for a comment, Director General of Police Omendra Bhardwaj told the Indian Express, “Despite the passage of a lot of time, the case was not moving forward. Moreover, it is accepted in governance that if charges are not framed against any particular officer, he is deemed to be innocent. Also, there is a standard procedure that after three years of suspension, the status of any officer’s service is reviewed. In this review it was found that the charges against the said officer were yet to be proved. The promotion in his case was long overdue and has hence been effected as a routine procedure. There is nothing out of turn done for him.”

Dinesh MN, a 1995-batch IPS officer, was arrested on April 24, 2007 on charges of killing Sohrabuddin in a fake encounter. He was suspended from the post of Udaipur SP since then till October 28, 2007. From October 29, 2007 to February 21, 2008 he was kept on Awaited Posting Order (APO). The next day onwards he was yet again suspended by the previous Vasundhara Raje government.

On November 26, 2005, Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged gangster was killed in an encounter in Ambaji, Udaipur, by Dinesh and his team. Dinesh, along with 22 others, was arrested in the case.
