The doctors were conducting surgeries at a government health centre. It is learnt that were no beds, stretchers, blankets or any post-operative care.

Mahila Congress president Shobha Oza demanded strict action those responsible for the botched-up operation. “Jharkhand and Chattisgarh both have BJP governments. Many women lost their lives in Jharkhand in sterilisation case, but no lessons were learnt. Such a thing has happened again. This is shameful and tragic. Those responsible should be immediately punished,” she said.

It is learnt that were no beds, stretchers, blankets or any post-operative care.

Jharkhand Social Welfare Minister Louis Marandi said the operation was conducted by a private organization, which has been blacklisted after the botched-up sterilization came to light. “The operation was conducted by Surya Foundation Clinic. Its memorandum of understanding with the government has expired. Despite this, it went on with the sterilization programme,” she said.

Marandi said there generators were there for the surgeries but torch was used for post-operative care.

The matter was raised in Jharkhand Assembly on Friday by BJP MLA Jaiprakash Singh Bhokta. He said despite the Chief Secretary ordering proper arrangements for sterilisation camp, the family planning surgery had been done in torch light.
