The youth, Bhubaneswar: A Sambalpur youth pursuing PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University , and his brother, were recently sent to jail for refusing to pay Rs 2,000 bribe to a revenue official.After running from pillar to Madan Meher, son of a cobbler from Dhama village near Sambalpur, alleged that the local revenue inspector (RI) demanded the money when his grandfather, Pitambar, approached her for demarcation of a property in May .“After my grandfather brought it our notice, my brother, Udhab (an engineering student), and I went to the RI. She threatened to send us to jail if we created a scene,“ Madan said. The RI could not be contacted for comment. Madan, who himself polished shoes to fund his own education till his graduation, said he went to Dhama police station to lodge a complaint against the RI for her behaviour on May 12.

The RI also lodged a complaint that the two siblings had threatened her. “The next day police called us, arrested us and produced us in a court. We got bail on May 14,“ he said.

A few days after getting bail, the brothers ting bail, the brother lodged a petition wit the district collector allegin that they were framed and p lice allegedly showed undu haste to arrest them.

“The district administr tion called me on June 20 t hear the complaint. When went, they asked me to come a ter two days on June 22. I had t miss an interview for assista professorship in JNU becaus of that,“ he said. “Finally, whe a Dalit outfit, Western Odish Dalit Suraksha Parishad, inte vened my statements were r corded,“ he said.
