MANGALORE: Two FIRs have been registered against yoga guru Ramdev in Dakshina Kannada district for his controversial ‘honeymoon’ remarks on AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi with reference to dalit house visits.

Konaje police in Mangalore city commissionerate limits has registered an FIR against Ramdev based on a complaint filed by dalit activist Lolaksha.

Lolaksha had filed a complaint with Konaje station alleging that Ramdev has insulted the dalit community by making derogatory remarks. The police has filed an FIR under Section 3(1)(x) of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 along with relevant sections of IPC. Meanwhile, another FIR against Ramdev has been filed at Belthangady police station under Dakshina Kannada police based on a complaint lodged by Belthangady taluk unit of Congress.

“I strongly feel that it is a small but a firm step towards bringing the perpetrators to book. Keeping in view of this, I demand that Mr Ramdev must be arrested and sent to judicial custody by the Mangalore Police at the earliest,” Lolaksha said.

Meanwhile, the SC/ST Cell of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee burnt the effigy of yoga guru Ramdev near deputy commissioner’s office here on Saturday.

Congress leader Dr Raghu said that the statements of Ramdev has hurt the sentiments of dalit community. “Ramdev, who was just an ordinay yoga teacher few years ago, is a seller medicines worth crores today. We have no objection on his medicines business. However, he should resort to making statements that insult dalit women,” Raghu said.

KPCC secretary Ivan D’Souza said that the yoga guru has made derogatory and anti-national remarks on dalits, who are the essential part of our nation. “Nation’s progress is never possible until dalits are given due respect. Ramdev should withdraw his statements immediately. He should be arrested immediately and stringent punishment should be awarded to him,” Ivan said.

AICC member PV Mohan said that Ramdev is speaking on behalf of BJP’s Prime Minsiterial candidate Narendra Modi. “Ramdev is commercial saint, who has shops in all the corners of the nation. He speaks for Modi and it is disastrous for the nation. We have to launch apolitical fight against such people,” Mohan said.

SC/ST Cell district president Padmanabha Naringana and DCC in-charge president Ibrahim Kodijal spoke.

The court of metropolitan magistrate gave this order while admitting an istegasa (legal complaint) by Vijay Rao of Jodhpur on Friday through his counsel M.A. Rao demanding an FIR against Ramdev and an appropriate action against him for his comments involving the Dalit community.

Ramdev had stoked a controversy last month by stating that, “Rahul goes to Dalits’ houses for honeymoon and picnic.”

After massive outrage, Ramdev had expressed regret for the remarks.

“The court admitted the istegasa yesterday and ordered police to register an FIR against Ramdev under sections 171(C) of IPC (interfere with free exercise of any electoral right commits the offence of undue influence at an election) and 3 (1) (X) of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which stands for making insulting remarks pertaining to the caste or community) and initiate an investigation against him,” said M.A. Rao, the counsel for the complainant.
