Joint Statement of Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association (IPTA) and Progressive Writers’ Association (PWA) on the false charges by Chhattisgarh Police against Social, Cultural and Political Activists

Continuing with the increasing state suppression of voices of dissent and for justice, the Chhattisgarh police has filed a false case against Prof. Nandini Sunder (DU), Prof. Archana Prasad (JNU), Vineet Tiwari (CPI and IPTA), Sanjay Parate (CPM), Manju Kawasi and Mangal Ram Karma charging them with the murder of Saamnaath Baghel, a coordinator of an illegal group similar to Salwa Judum. The police had also burned the effigies of these activists earlier when they had exposed the police atrocities, including rape, on adiwasi women in Chhatisgarh. In the light of the recent CBI probe, initiated in response to a petition by Prof. Nandini Sunder, finding the Chhattisgarh police guilty of burning the adiwasi villages, these charges are certainly a tactics of revenge and harassment by police. IPTA and PWA strongly condemn such misuse of office and authority by Chhattisgarh police and initimidation of the voices demanding justice for people of Chhatisgarh. We demand that these charges are revoked immediately and disciplinary actions are taken against the police officers guilty of undermining the ethics of police force.
