A lawyer representing some Muslim youth accused of being operatives of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) has alleged that an officer of the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) threatened to kill him if he continued to defend the accused.

The case pertains to the arrest of over a dozen Muslim youth, many of them engineering students, from Sikar, Jodhpur, Ajmer and Jaipur last year. While the police say the youth are operatives of IM, civil society groups claim they are being framed.

The defence lawyer, Mehmood Pracha, said the incident took place on June 10, while the District and Sessions Court in Jaipur was hearing arguments about the framing of charges and ATS inspector Dinesh Sharma started “arguing” on behalf of the public prosecutor and he objected to it.

He alleged that Sharma confronted him while he was leaving the court. “He threatened to kill me if I ever came back to argue this case… he said I was trying to save terrorists,” Pracha said. Later, he submitted a written complaint to District and Sessions Judge Dinesh Chand Somani. Responding to the accusation, the Rajasthan ATS said the judge, in whose presence the incident took place, has ordered a probe.
