Lok Sabha Results: Facts debunk Hindu polarization propaganda

Parliament House of India

By Mumtaz Alam, India Tomorrow,

New Delhi, 21 May 2014: By winning 282 seats alone in the just concluded Lok Sabha election 2014, Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Narendra Modi has made a history both for itself and the country. It is first time BJP has won so many Lok Sabha seats. It is also first time that a single party has got such a big majority in General Election in last 30 years. Credit for BJP’s overwhelming victory is being given to ‘polarization’ of Hindu votes. But a thorough assessment of the results in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand simply debunks the propaganda. It is not polarization but a sharp division of non-BJP votes that has helped BJP win so many seats.

Out of 282 Lok Sabha seats, BJP has won 106 in three Hindi states – Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. But if one goes through the results of the 106 seats that BJP has won, one finds that there are 72 seats where the winning BJP candidates have polled less than the votes polled by Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party together.

Out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, BJP has won 72 seats. The detailed constituency-wise results show that BSP and SP together have polled more than the winning BJP candidate on 36 seats and BSP, SP and Congress together have polled more than the BJP candidate on 9 other seats. It means that on 45 out of 72 seats that BJP won in Uttar Pradesh, it has got less votes than three main rivals. For example, in Allahabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Amroha and even in Jhansi where Uma Bharati was candidate, BJP has got votes lesser than SP and BSP together.

In Bihar, out of the total 40 seats BJP has this time won 23 seats. On 17 out of the 23 seats, the party polled less than the combine votes of Rashtriya Janata Dal and ruling Janata Dal United. Not only this, BJP’s ally Lok Janshakti Party has won 6 seats in Bihar, but on 5 out of the 6 seats, the party of Ram Vilas Paswan has polled less than RJD and JDU combine.

Similar is the situation in Jharkahnd where BJP has won 12 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats. In the state, BJP’s rivals Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha – and some places Congress – have together got more votes than the winning BJP candidate on as many as 10 seats.

Now the question is: If Hindus got united in favor of BJP then who has voted for BSP and SP in Uttar Pradesh and RJD and JDU in Bihar?

One may say only Muslim votes have gone to these secular parties but if one looks at the list of constituencies below one can find that even in those seats where Muslims are less than 10 percent, non-BJP parties have got more votes than winning BJP candidate.

UP’s results have also thrown some other interesting facts.

In 2009 Lok Sabha election, BJP had got around 96 lakh (9695904) votes in Uttar Pradesh and won 10 seats. This time the party has got 3.3 crore (33906001) votes, more than three times compared to 2009, but has got seven times more seats. The party has won 71 seats in this election.

While BSP had got 1.5 core (15191044) votes in 2009 in UP and won 20 seats but this time though it got more votes (15588807) but it couldn’t win a single seat. Similar is the situation of SP. It has got 1.2 crore (12884968) votes and won 23 seats but this time even after getting more votes 1.7 crore (17794033) it has won only 5 seats.
