marriage-07INDORE ( 6 Feb ): Upper caste people blocked marriage procession of a youth hailing from scheduled caste in a village near Barnagar town of Ujjain district on Monday, prompting administration and police officials to step in to maintain law and order.

Police booked around eight members of the upper caste community and provided security to the procession. The situation was tense in the village, but due to the deployment of police, peace prevailed.

The commotion started in Jafla village, 8 km from Barnagar, in the morning when Neeraj, son of Ranchod, a member of Scheduled Caste, was taking out his marriage procession on a horse. Members of the upper cast blocked the way and threatened to resort to violence, if the groom does not forgo the idea. They claimed that it was against the tradition of the village.

Neeraj and his sister who is slated to get married on February 8 – immediately informed the Barnagar police, who rushed to the spot in strength.

Barnagar police station in-charge Vivek Kanodia said, “We have caught some people trying to block the marriage procession. Police have been deployed in strength to prevent any flare-up.”

Administrative officials led by sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Avi Prasad also reached the spot and held discussions with the villagers, informing them about laws that prevent discrimination.

Barnagar police have taken Jalam Singh, Rai Singh and 6 others into custody . They have been booked under relevant sections of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Kanodia said.

The police and administrative officials later escorted the procession and were welcomed by the groom’s family as guests.
The SDM has asked the Barnagar police to ensure presence of personnel in the village and carry out patrolling in the village for next three days to prevent any untoward incident.

Barnagar tehsildar Sudeep Meena said the situation was peaceful in the village. “Some miscreants tried to create a commotion, but were caught,” he added.
