Tell the US government to stop shielding Dow Chemical from accountability for corporate crimes stemming from the 1984 Bhopal, India gas disaster.
In 1984 a factory majority-owned by Union Carbide (UCC, a US corporation) leaked toxic gas in Bhopal, India, killing 8K-10K people instantly & maiming 500K more.

India charged UCC with manslaughter, but UCC refused to show for trial. Dow Chemical bought UCC in 2001 but has not made UCC available to face charges. Under a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, India sent 4 notices to the US Dept. of Justice to summon Dow to explain UCC’s whereabouts. The DoJ has ignored or obstructed every notice.

The same DoJ made BP pay $4 billion in criminal fines and penalties for Deepwater Horizon. 31 years of US protection of UCC and Dow must end. We insist that the US govt. meet its obligations under Treaty & international law by immediately serving notice upon Dow to attend court in Bhopal on July 13, 2016.

Most Americans are not aware of the horrible tragedy that took place in Bhopal, India in December 1984. A leak from the nearby Union Carbide plant spilled tons of toxic gas into the city, killing more than 8,000 people overnight. Hundreds of thousands more were left with life-long debilitating illnesses. To date, around 25,000 deaths are attributed to the disaster.

To add insult to injury, after the disaster Union Carbide refused to show up to court in Bhopal and face criminal charges. And when Dow Chemical bought Union Carbide in 2001, they claimed that Dow was passed the baton of ownership and profits but not the baton of liabilities.

The US government could pressure Dow to do the right thing, but instead the Department of Justice has been shielding Dow and Union Carbide from responsibility for over two and a half decades. And now, a possible merger between Dow Chemical and DuPont is looming. Once again the baton of ownership will pass hands but the liabilities will be ignored – unless we speak up.

Please join me in telling the US government: stop shielding Dow Chemical from its crimes in Bhopal. Don’t let the world forget about Bhopal. Sign the petition today. https://wh.gov/isOdv
