Meerut: Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha and Om Shiv Mahakaal Seva Samiti are all set to install the country’s first Nathuram Godse statue in Meerut.
A foundation stone-laying ceremony, amidst heavy police presence, took place on Wednesday in the city’s Sharda Road office of the Mahasabha.”The statue will be a bust of Godse in white stone. The likeness of the statue was presented in the meeting today in the form of his framed portrait,” said Pandit Ashok Kumar Sharma, member of the Hindu Mahasabha’s central working body.

Expenditure for the statue will be borne by Hindu Mahasabha worker Ramnath Luthra. “I’ll bear all the expenses for the construction of the statue till its completion,” he announced.

Hindu Mahasabha members said the plan is to complete the statue’s construction by January 30, the day on which Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.

Abhishek Aggarwal, founder, Om Shiv Mahakaal Seva Samiti, when asked if the step to install Godse’s statue would create disharmony in Meerut, replied, “We have the democratic right to establish any statue within the premises which we own.”

Prodded further, Sharma added, “Godse was a martyr and Hindu Mahasabha has always been in his support. He was also connected to Hindu Mahasabha as he was once a part of the organization.”

This has come two days after the Hindu Mahasabha bought land at Siddhauli’s Para village in Sitapur district, where it intends to start constructing a Godse temple on January 30, the day Gandhi was shot dead.
