CHENNAI: Kancheepuram Police arrested a 35-year-old differently-abled school teacher on Friday, on charges of rape after sexually exploiting and impregnating a 14-year-old dalit girl student.

The parents of the girl, both casual labourers, filed a complaint with an All Women Police Station in the district after the girl missed her menstrual cycle for three consecutive months and complained of stomach pain earlier this week. Her worried parents took her to a hospital where the doctors said  the girl was pregnant.

When questioned, the girl said that Loganathan (35), a teacher in her school, who is handicapped after polio attack, had tied her hands and legs and raped her at knife-point, when she was alone in the computer room in her school.

The Class VII student also alleged that Loganathan had continued to harass and sexually assault her whenever he could isolate her during lunch breaks, physical education classes and after school hours.

Loganathan, during interrogation by the police, confessed that he had sexually exploited the girl on the pretext of helping her to fare well in exams.

Based on the complaint, the Kancheepuram Police registered a case under Section 376(rape) of Indian Penal Code and under the provisions of the  Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 2014 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.

Loganathan was produced before a Magistrate who remanded him to judicial custody.
