A chargesheet filed by the Mumbai police crime branch recorded statements of 59 witnesses in its case against Indian Police Service officer Sunil Paraskar, accused of repeatedly raping a 29-year-old model in 2013.

Close aides of the suspended IPS officer and owners of a private apartment where one incident of the alleged rape took place are among the witnesses in the 724-page chargesheet filed by the crime branch’s Crime Against Women Cell at the Borivali Court on Tuesday.

Paraskar (57), has been booked under Sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 354 (molestation) of the Indian Penal Code in the chargesheet.

According to Public Prosecutor Varsha Joshi, the chargesheet includes statements of the model before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The model had complained to the police last July, accusing Paraskar of raping her on several occasions in apartments in Navi Mumbai and Madh Island.

The other witness included Paraskar’s driver, and neighbours in Nerul. According to the chargesheet, the owner of the flat in Madh Island where the model alleged that the incident took place, has also given a statement to the police in the case, the prosecutor said.

“A log book and nine CDs of their conversations have been taken as evidence,” Joshi said.

According to the chargesheet, in 2013, the model’s brother had assaulted their mother and a police complaint had been registered then at Dindoshi police station.

But the police took no action in the case, and the model approached Paraskar instead.

The two exchanged phone numbers, and Paraskar called her a few times, the chargesheet notes.

In October 2013, the model registered a case of molestation at Goregaon police station against a man living in her building. Paraskar had then messaged her, saying that she would

be not be able to handle it alone and that she should contact him.

The chargesheet notes that the model did not contact Paraskar.

All this while, the model was also receiving obscene calls on phone and messages on Facebook and Twitter from unidentified men.

The model had then sent an application to Paraskar, who asked a woman officer at Goregaon police station to investigate her complaint.

The chargesheet also details the first instance of sexual assault which took place on December 1, 2013, when Paraskar asked the model to meet him alone at Bandra Reclamation.

Paraskar, the chargesheet notes, drove her to his apartment in Nerul, where he sexually assaulted her.

According to the filed chargesheet, on December 7, 2013, Paraskar took the model to a bungalow in Madh Island. He parked his official vehicle at Inorbit Mall in Malad, leaving his driver and wireless operator there, and travelled with the model to Madh Island in a private vehicle.

The chargesheet notes that at the bungalow, Paraskar first took the model to the terrace where he admitted to “love her”. Paraskar then took her to a bedroom downstairs and offered her alcohol. She declined, but Paraskar consumed alcohol, and allegedly raped her.

The model identified both Paraskar’s driver and the wireless operator, as well as the owner and a domestic help at the Madh Island bungalow. These four witnesses also identified the model, telling the crime branch that she was present at the site of the incident.

On Tuesday, Paraskar, along with his brother were present in court when the chargesheet was filed.

The former Deputy Inspector General furnished a personal surety in court. The case has been committed to a special women’s sessions court and is scheduled to be heard on June 12.

“We have obtained the court’s permission to keep the investigation open to file a supplementary chargesheet in case of any more evidence in connection with the rape, as well as other allegations,”said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Atulchandra Kulkarni.
