TNN
Relatives and neighbours of two youths from Mahim have alleged that a few Bandra police officers brutally thrashed them after picking them up on the suspicion that they were “Pakistani terrorists or ISIS agents“ early on Saturday and told them to “leave India and go to Pakistan.“The cops picked up gym trainer Asif Shaikh (19) and Danish Shaikh (19) from a spot near Bandra Reclamation when they were returning home from Bhabha Hospital, hit Asif with belts and batons for three hours and slapped Danish be fore their parents were called to take them back home, claimed the victims’ kin. Police have initiated an inquiry into allegations of thrashing two youths af ter the victims’ families complained to Bandra police.Mumbai police commissioner Ahmad Javed told TOI via a text message that DCP (zone IX) S Chaudhary was looking into the matter.

“The complainant has met the ACP (Bandra division) Sanjay Kadam, and Kadam is looking into the matter,“ said Chaudhary . “Asif (Shaikh) is undergoing treatment at Bhabha hospital and the matter is under inquiry .Prima facie it appears Asif and his friend had a fight with someone and they suffered injuries,“ said Kadam.

Asif has suffered injuries to his hands, back and legs. On Friday, Asif and Danish Shaikh, who are unrelated to each other but live in the same building near St Michael Church in Mahim, had gone to see their neighbour who has been admitted to Bhabha hospital for a hernia operation.“After meeting the neighbour–who is Asif ‘s relative–they were returning home by way of Bandra Reclamation at midnight on their bike when they stopped on seeing two drunkards lying on the road.

The two stopped and were shifting the drunkards on to the side of the road when four cops picked up all the four and took them to the police station,“ Asif ‘s neighbour Javed told TOI.

Javed said that the cops let the two drunken men go after fining them. “But they did not allow Asif and Danish to go. They first slapped Danish When Asif intervened and asked why they were hitting his friend, the cops got annoy ed. They forcibly made him sleep on a table in the detection room and assaulted him for three hours. The injuries on Asif reveal the cops’ inhuman treatment. He suffered injuries on his back, leg and hands due to the assault with belts and batons,“ he alleged.

Advocate Rahul Dangle al leged the cops not only assaulted the youths but also asked their families to leave the country. “They took the law into their hands and assaulted two innocents who are just 19 years old and do not have any criminal background and hail from a good family and locality . The cops also told the victims’ parents that they should say that the public assaulted their children and not the cops. The cops also said they were ready to pay Rs 50,000 or more to the youths and asked the youths not to press the matter further and lodge a complaint which will not yield any result,“ claimed Dangle.
