A former corporator Vasantrao Nagvekar from Wagle Estate was arrested by the Wagle Estate police station for beating up a man over Navratri donation.
The victim, who works as an octroi agent and identified as Paresh Bhanushali (40), was standing near his building when a group of local party members asked him to pay Rs25,000 donation for Navratri. When Bhanushali denied, they started beating him up.
A case with the Wagle Estate police station has been registered under several rioting sections and 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing harm), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code.
Apart from Nagvekar, four others have also been arrested, however they were later released on bail.
According to the cops, on October 17, Bhanushali was standing near his building, Raghunath Nagar around 9pm. The group allegedly approached him, gave him a receipt of Rs25,000 and asked him to pay. When Bhanushali denied, they started arguing and they thrashed him. Bhanushali suffered minor injuries and a few scratches.
Senior police inspector AD Kshirsagar said, “When the accused were brought here, they said a Bhanushali was injured when his building watchman was trying to start a car and it was dashed against him. The main person in the group was a former corporator of that area. Though the victim was reeady to pay Rs5,001, but the group did not budge. We are investigating further.”
