MUMBAI: Mumbai University authorities held hectic meetings for a chief guest to preside over Sunday’s convocation. The hunt started on Friday after scientist R A Mashelkar expressed his inability to attend the function. However, sources said Anil Kakodkar, former Atomic Energy Commission chairman, might come as a chief guest to the function. A spokesperson for the university told TOI, “Of course there will be a chief guest to give out the degree. You shall know who it is tomorrow.” The convocation ceremony will be webcast and a link will be up on its website: www.mu.ac.in
Meanwhile, university security guards conducted surprise checks at various department and hostels and took away placards that students were preparing to display on the day of convocation. This came after some students said their protest against the “autocratic” decision of the vice-chancellor to suspend econometrics professor Neeraj Hatekar would continue.

A group of students and Hatekar met chancellor K Sankaranarayanan and informed him about the “issues facing the university and unjust suspension”. The Save Mumbai University Organisation will stage a silent protest on Sunday.
