NAVI MUMBAI: Crime against women has gone up by over 100% in 2013 compared to 2012. While 34 rape cases were reported in 2012, the figure stood at 68 in 2013. Similarly, compared to 63 molestation cases in 2012, 138 were reported in 2013.

However, the silver lining is that the city police achieved a detection rate of 66% in 2013, which is commendable, considering that Mumbai’s detection rate for the same period is in single digits.

These figures were part of the crime report presented by city police commissioner Ashok Sharma at a press conference in CBD Belapur on Thursday.

Sharma also claimed that the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate achieved a conviction rate of about 50%, the highest amongst all the police commissionerates in Maharashtra. Two received capital punishment and 14 got life.

In one of the most important convictions, after a speedy trial, a 53-year-old man, Dattatray Ambo Rokade was sentenced to death by the Thane court for raping and murdering a five-year-old girl from the neighbourhood in January 2013. The case fell under the APMC police station jurisdiction.

At the same time, the city police received a setback in two cases – the murders of Sandhya Singh and builder Sunil Lahoria. These were transferred to the Mumbai crime branch.

Statistics reveal that in 2013, the recovery rate of stolen property stood at 51%. Out of property worth Rs 50.18 crore stolen, Rs 25.39 crore was recovered.

Vehicle theft cases went down in 2013. While 772 cases were reported in 2012, 685 were reported in 2013.

Cases of minors missing also went up. In 2013, 43 minor boys and 36 minor girls went missing. Out of those, 36 boys and 28 girls

were found.
